How 4G/5G Antenna Misalignment Affects the MNO Business

Why do operators need to survey their network? A few degrees of antenna error hurts revenue as well as RF KPIs. For an operator with 7 billion USD in yearly revenue, the exposure runs into hundreds of millions of dollars.

Chart of the business impact of 4G/5G antenna misalignment on mobile operators
  • Capacity: Nokia Bell Labs found that a 4° to 5° downtilt error can cut capacity by up to 60%. If 5% of sectors are affected, about 210M USD of revenue is exposed
  • ARPU: Ericsson found the operator with the best network earns 31% higher ARPU. Realizing just 10% of that gap is worth about 240M USD a year
  • Churn: the same study shows 27% lower churn, which keeps about 32,400 customers a month, around 253M USD a year
  • Spectrum: misalignment wastes about 6% of the spectrum value, around 25M USD
  • Site visits: each visit that doesn't fix the problem costs 600 to 1,000 USD
